Hi all! I need some advice about our neighbor's cat and the weird situation we've found ourselves in.
  • 03
My husband and I moved into our first house in 2024 and noticed that a tiny black cat would hang out around our front yard. She was very shy and skinny, so we

assumed she was a stray. She got friendlier with us and started to fall asleep outside the window where our cat perches. (He would chirp and meow at her.) We thought about taking her inside,
  • 05
but decided to talk to our neighbors to make sure she wasn't someone's. Our neighbor across the street said that the little cat is theirs. The neighbors

adopted her and she got pregnant and had kittens, which they decided to keep. Neighbor said that her kittens bully her and don't let her eat. We agreed that we'd keep feeding her.

Thanksgiving weekend, we saw the cat outside and when it was only 10° F (-12°C) We set her up a spot in our guest bedroom and she curled up and took a nap before we kicked her out when we saw our neighbors were home.
  • 09
After we her stay in our guest bedroom, we set her up a box in on our back porch. She slept in the box most nights for a couple weeks. She would always come out of the box to run around the yard with our dog, and very rarely wouldn't be out there.

The next cold snap, the cat bolted inside our house when my husband let our dog outside at 4:30am. My husband saw the neighbor outside and told her that we had spend the night warming up in our house. Our

neighbor went on and on about how the little cat is her favorite and the other cats don't let her eat or come inside their house. How the little cat sleeps under their deck year round. She said
  • 13
she doesn't mind us letting her inside, especially when it's super cold out. Later that week, we gave the neighbors a holiday card with our phone numbers, so we could communicate and make
  • 14
sure that the little cat is safe and the neighbors know when she's visiting us. We haven't heard anything from the neighbors since.
  • 15
It's been bitterly cold in the Midwest with a bunch of snow. The little cat has been inside with us for 5 days and doesn't want to go outside. Our neighbors still haven't texted or called us. Little cat plays with our cat and dog and has made herself at home.
  • 16
We haven't been calling her by her name since it's "Treat" because that means something different to our dog.
  • 17
What do we do now? We don't want to "steal" our neighbor's cat, but we already tried to communicate with no response.

CatnipCricket-329 Indoor outdoor cats choose their people. That kitty has chosen you. Get kitty vetted, let him inside with your cat and dog. If kitty wants to go outside or back to visit his first home, he's free to do so, but unlikely

Realgirlreddit Same thing happened to me almost exactly, except it wasn't the cold that brought her onside, it was being chased by a coyote. She was my cat after that. A few months later my neighbor asked if her cat was inside my house and I just said yes and my neighbor was like, ok just checking!

I bet your neighbor won't care. But let her know if you're afraid of getting too attached before confirming

Calgary_Calico Offer to buy her off of them. Putting a cat outside, especially in the winter, over bullying from other cats does not show they care about her, it shows they're irresponsible and want to take the easy road. Give them the easiest road possible and offer to take her off their hands permanently

Foreign-Meeti... That cat has made her choice and it's you. In the other place, she's not appreciated and bullying is allowed. At yours, she knows she's seen and cared for. Try this: keep her indoors and see how long it takes for the owners to swing by and ask about her. My guess is never. Enjoy her! She's certainly enjoying you!

julesk Keep the cat safe inside. If your neighbors miss her, they know where you live and have your contact info. They said it was okay if she came inside and that the kittens would let her inside their house so I doubt they miss her.
  • 24
Mollytovcocktail... She is DEFINITELY meant to be your cat. I can't believe your cat and dog just accepted her and she just accepted them. Meant to be. It's worth another conversation with your

neighbors but you probably need to go over there in person if you feel safe doing so, as they're clearly not going to be answering your texts.
  • 26
Leaving her outside because the other cats are bullying her is obviously NOT a humane option. I would present it to them like "our cat and dog have bonded with her and she with them and now she doesn't want to leave and she certainly doesn't want to live outside anymore". Offer to buy her from them.

imakemagic She is your cat now. I make the rules.

Emotional-Dog8... Sounds like you have been chosen! Get her vetted and spayed. She's adorable !!!
  • 29
Possible_Top2783 She made her choice. No need to bother with the neighbors about it.
